Nazaruddin 'threatened' Constitutional Court

Muhammad Nazaruddin, the treasurer of the incumbent Democratic Party, who has been linked to a major bribery case, threatened Constitutional Court Secretary-General K. Janedri M Gaffar after he refused a bribe, Constitutional Court chief Mahfud MD says.

Nazaruddin allegedly said that he would “wreak havoc” on the Constitutional Court after Janedri’s returned money from Nazaruddin after the latter had requested a meeting with Janedri in Jakarta.

“[Janedri] was suddenly summoned [by Nazaruddin],” Mahfud said Friday, as quoted by tribunnews.com.

According to Mahfud, Nazaruddin handed two envelopes containing money totaling S$120,000 to Janedri. Janedri was at first unaware that the envelopes contained money, Mahfud said. Janedri later had a court staff member return the money to Nazaruddin’s house in Pejaten, South Jakarta.

Nazaruddin then threatened Janedri, Mahfud said.

“It was as if he was forcing it on him. The threat was that if [the money] wasn’t accepted he would wreak havoc on the Constitutional Court,” Mahfud said, referring to Nazaruddin’s threat.

Mahfud said he was curious to know what Nazaruddin meant by “wreaking havoc”.

Nazaruddin is linked to a bribery case involving the construction of an athlete’s dormitory in South Sumatra.
